Freestanding baths are still very much on trend, with homeowners coveting the sense of style and luxury they bring to the bathing space. Choice is now extensive, in size, style and material, but the decisive factor is space – and having enough of it!
For those with a little less space than they would like, some of the leading bathroom brands have added more compact freestanding models to their range – along with true home spa technologies such as BubbleMassage.
Kohler’s extensive range of freestanding baths delivers on choice in terms of shape, finish and size – along with customisable BubbleMassage models that create thousands of bubbles filled with warm air to massage and support the entire body. Sizes in baths range from 1672mm to 1838mm in length (and with a lot more in between).
The brand’s most compact freestanding bath is the beautiful Lithocast Aliento – a bold rectangular shape with arching corners that measures 1672mm x 914mm wide.
The stunning Aliento Lithocast will be the statement piece of any bathroom.
Lithocast is a high grade matte finish acrylic that has the look and feel of a finely honed stone. It also keeps the water warmer for longer. The Abrazo Lithocast bath, which is a total contrast in shape sporting soft organic curves reminiscent of a nautilus shell, is another more compact option measuring just 1676mm x 800mm.

If space is no problem then the strikingly angular design of the Askew is a true statement piece! Resembling three plinths, stacked, but slightly askew, the Askew – at 1838mm x 878mm – offers indulgent luxury in stand out style.
Or opt for a modern bath style with a truly unique, show-stopping shape… Askew.
Cast iron is a popular choice for baths, not least because of its sense of heritage and craftsmanship. Kohler’s Reve is no different but is a very modern take on the concept featuring sculptural lines, deep profile and linear shape. Its 700mm length is a mid point in the size stakes.
A bath full of classical styling and character – the Reve Cast Iron.
And for those preferring a lighter weight and moulded interiors, Kohler has a number of premium freestanding baths in a variety of shapes and sizes – from the Japanese-inspired Escale (in oval and rectangular shape) at 1775mm to the clean, very contemporary lines of the Evok (oval and rectangular shape available) bath at 1700mm length.
The Evok and Escale models offer yet another level to the spa experience with the option of BubbleMassage technology. This is the modern take on home spa baths whereby thousands of bubbles, filled with warm air, are released from virtually invisible holes around the lower inner perimeter of the bath. These bubbles gently support and massage the entire body, although the intensity of the bubbles, and the zones they target can be completely customised.
Award-winning NZ designer Kelly Gammie, recognised for her love of colour and texture, recently completed a luxurious townhouse project for a busy professional couple. The home’s compact bathrooms showcase a clever use of bold granite with natural timbers.
The owners, while living in the inner city, wanted to incorporate their love of nature into their bathing space – the look was to be sophisticated while exhibiting a soft masculine edge.
Kelly chose large format moody, granite-look tiles as her starting point – her philosophy is that the WOW factor has to sit side by side with functionality for any bathroom to truly shine.
To prevent visual overload in the master bath, the vanity wall was finished in a solid ebony-brown tile with fixtures such as bath, back-to-wall toilet and vanity/basin in crisp white. Hand-blown glass pendant lights by Kate Brown complete the look in this bathroom.
Clean lines were essential for this richly textured bathroom to have visual impact while not overwhelming. Kohler’s Terrace Basin, with its beautiful rectilinear design and European Oak storage drawer, plus the brand’s Grande rimless toilet were the perfect fit. Tapware from Kohler included the semi industrial style Composed mixer – winner of this year’s Red Dot Design Award (2017) – plus the Memphis bath spout.
Kelly injected some defining black accents in the form of powder coated aluminium shutters and custom-made framed shower.
Only weeks into 2018 and Kohler has created history at two of the world’s leading trade shows for the bathroom industry.

CES is THE global show for the tech industry attracting almost 200,000 attendees. Kohler clearly led the bathroom industry, with CES recognising Kohler’s outstanding and world-leading contribution to bringing technology and voice control to the bathroom in a meaningful way.
Media and designers alike were excited during the launch of Kohler Konnect
Kohler used the CES industry-specialist stage to launch its voice-enabled Kohler Konnect technology whereby, for the first time, consumers can customise their bathroom experience by simply saying the words!
The technology extends to the shower, bath, toilet, mirror and tap – they are all finally connected. And simply by saying a command such as ‘make-up mode’, ‘pour 500ml’, ‘flush’, ‘sports shower’ the mirror, the tap, the toilet and the shower can be activated. The result is a truly customised bathroom experience that is both hands free and totally relaxing.

Run a bath to a preset temperature, turn on the foot warmer on the intelligent toilet, activate presets for sound, water, steam and lighting in the shower – all by voice control.
These incredible products of the future will launch in the US late 2018 … we hope to see them reach our shores soon after. Watch this space!!
Timeless serenity. Classical elegance. White on white is one bathroom trend that’s here to stay says Kohler. White bathrooms are considered as tranquil and efficient today as they were five years ago. Put simply, a white bathroom will not date, and continues to welcome and refresh tired bodies and busy minds.
So if calm and tranquillity top your bathroom wish-list, consider opting for a clean, white-on-white palette and sleek modern style. Smart selections of taps, basins and bath with simple lines will keep your physical space – and your mind – blissfully free of clutter! The all- whites are softened by raw timber flooring and accessories – with a focus on soft lines and fluid curves. Its quintessential simplicity delivers a timeless sophistication.
A classically timeless white on white bathroom.
In this white-on-white palette, Kohler’s choice in tapware is a perfect fit with the overall ambience of the space. Avid features beautifully simple lines that belie the technical prowess of this mixer. With the basin mixer, an internal cartridge, coupled with an aerator, creates excellent water efficiency, limiting flow to just six litres a minute, while the slender design of the handle ensures easy, accurate control of both flow and temperature. The Avid matching shower mixer completes the look.
The Avid basin mixer is paired with the Forefront rectangular countertop basin – a true classic!
Here, the Avid basin mixer is paired with the ever popular Forefront basin with it’s sleek, low profile. The Avid shower mixer with diverter pairs with both the Exhale slide shower (note matching white, silicone, easy-clean spray face which continues the white theme!) and RainCan over head shower for a truly drenching rain-shower experience.
Both the Exhale and RainCan feature Kohler’s Katalyst Air Induction Technology – a patented technology which reduces water consumption while increasing the sense of ‘deluge’ water delivery. These drenching, water-efficient showers – rated 3 star WELS – are produced by injecting two litres of air a minute into the water stream.
For a stand-out bath, the Abrazo is a nautilus-inspired pure white bath in lithocast, a high end acrylic that looks like finely honed stone but is soft on the skin and retains the temperature of the water for longer periods.
The Abrazo Lithocast bath is a focal point in any bathroom.
And the finishing touch is matching Avid accessories which are classically simple and timeless in the style stakes!
The Avid accessories offer a stunning collection of matching towel bars, towel rings and toilet tissue holders.

Building or renovating? When it comes to choosing the right bath for your bathroom space, there are a number of key considerations to factor in.
First question …freestanding or built-in? This depends on two factors – space and functionality.
A freestanding bath takes more space than a built-in and also requires additional space for a table or shelf for toiletries.

Second question – shape? There is now a huge range of shapes available, especially in freestanding.
Take into consideration the overall design of the bathing space and any fittings that have already been selected – Kohler’s freestanding baths offer a choice of soft curves and clean, geometric lines
to echo tap, basin and accessory profiles.
Drop-in baths offer a choice of rectangular or oval shapes with or without lumbar supports and head pillows.
When choosing a freestanding bath check the weight and the structural supports of the bathroom – designs such as the Reve cast iron bath are heavier than acrylic options.

Size is another important consideration – lengths vary, in general, from 1675mm to 1800mm with some of the freestanding designs, such as the Askew, offering more generous proportions.
The stunning Askew Freestanding Lithocast bath – smooth and stone-like in appearance.
While the choice of bath material used to be restricted to cast iron or simple acrylic there are now far more options. Lithocast baths for example, while made from a high grade acrylic, actually look like a finely honed white stone – but are warm to the touch and comfortable on the skin.

The final consideration is one of luxury! Kohler leads the field in BubbleMassage technology whereby a series of tiny holes, concealed around the lower perimeter of the bath, emits thousands of bubbles filled with warm air that support and massage the entire body, releasing muscle tension and gently relaxing the bather from head to toe.
